This image has been in my mind for the past few months, and I finally put pen to paper.
I had the good fortune to be in the Cayman Islands this spring, doing research for a travel article. It was a diving trip, and I earned my scuba certification. I also got to meet and hang out with a great group of people.
My first night dive was in the waters of Cayman Brac. It was an incredible experience to explore beneath the surface of the ocean in the dark (not completely dark–we had flashlights). When my group came up from the dive, the boat was set to head back to shore, but we had run out of fuel. Someone called for another boat to help us out, and as we waited for that boat to come, I climbed the ladder to the top deck. The view was beautiful, and seeing it gave me an expansive feeling and a strong sense of peace. The ocean was calm, and the moon and the stars were shining. I was the only one up there for a few minutes, and I took in the scenery. The plethora of stars, the play of light on the ocean’s surface, the lights of the harbor, and the balmy weather were so calming and reassuring. They all formed a beauty and peace that you find only when you take the time to quiet down and take it all in.
